About
« Si l'histoire sert à quelque chose, c'est à ouvrir les yeux. »
— Pierre Vidal-Naquet
("If history serves any purpose, it is to open our eyes.")
HistographIQ is founded on the idea that history — and the way we view it — matters. Not only in a figurative sense, but quite literally. By building their own interactive maps with integrated timelines, users can visualise history and see how events — simultaneous or sequential — have unfolded around the world. This lets them, in turn, explore connections across space and time, and view our past and present from different perspectives.
There is good evidence that visualising narratives — giving abstract information a spatial and temporal shape — improves both understanding and retention. But HistographIQ is not just a visualisation tool. Students do not simply view a finished map; they build it. Each event must be researched, described, located, and placed in sequence. That process of active construction is itself the learning.
HistographIQ is designed primarily for secondary school history classes, though it is equally useful for anyone who wants to think spatially and temporally about the past and present — university students, educators, or simply the historically curious.
HistographIQ is in active development. Features currently on the roadmap include collaborative maps that let an entire class build a shared historical narrative together, historical border overlays that allow users to draw and superimpose territory boundaries — kingdoms, empires, trade zones — directly onto maps, and tools to connect events with lines showing movement, influence, or causation across geography and time. If you have ideas, feedback, or would like to discuss how HistographIQ might work in your classroom, we'd love to hear from you at info@iondata.co.
HistographIQ is built by iondata, a small independent consultancy. If you have a project involving maps, timelines, or AI-assisted data visualisation that you'd like to develop — whether for education, research, journalism, or any other context — we'd be happy to talk. We have particular experience building web applications that combine geographic and chronological data with conversational AI, and we're open to collaborations of all kinds.
