Terms of Service

Last updated: March 2026

Please read these terms carefully before using histographiq. By accessing or using the service, you agree to be bound by them.

1. Acceptance of terms

These Terms of Service govern your use of histographiq, a service provided by iondata Sàrl, Arnex-sur-Nyon, Switzerland. By creating an account or using the service in any way, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. The service

histographiq is a web application for creating interactive historical maps and timelines, with the assistance of an AI assistant. The service is currently in beta: features may change, be added, or be removed without notice, and continuous availability is not guaranteed. We will endeavour to provide reasonable notice of significant changes where possible.

3. Accounts

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Accounts are personal and non-transferable — you may not share or transfer your account to another person.

We reserve the right to suspend or permanently terminate accounts that violate these terms, engage in abusive behaviour, or are used in ways that harm other users or the service.

4. User content

You retain ownership of all maps, events, descriptions, and other content you create on histographiq ("user content"). By creating content on the service, you grant iondata Sàrl a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, process, and display that content solely for the purpose of providing the service to you.

You are responsible for ensuring that your content:

  • does not infringe the intellectual property or other rights of any third party;
  • does not present false or misleading information as established historical fact;
  • does not contain inappropriate, offensive, or unlawful material.

We do not claim ownership of your content and do not use it for any purpose beyond operating the service.

Users retain full ownership of the maps, events, and other content they create on histographiq. By publishing content on the service, users grant iondata Sàrl a limited, non-exclusive licence to store, display, and serve that content solely for the purpose of providing the service. This licence ends when the user deletes the content or their account.

5. AI assistant

The AI assistant is provided to support the creative and research process. All suggestions produced by the assistant — including event descriptions, dates, locations, and other information — are generated automatically and may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies.

You are responsible for reviewing, verifying, and editing AI-generated suggestions before publishing them. iondata Sàrl is not responsible for the accuracy, completeness, or appropriateness of any AI-generated content.

6. Wikipedia images

Images suggested by the AI assistant are sourced from Wikimedia Commons and are subject to their respective licences (which vary by image and may include Creative Commons or public domain terms). You are responsible for ensuring that your use of any suggested image is consistent with its licence. iondata Sàrl does not verify the licensing status of individual images.

7. Acceptable use

You may not use histographiq to create or publish content that is:

  • defamatory, hateful, or discriminatory on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic;
  • deliberately false or designed to mislead;
  • in violation of any applicable law or regulation.

The service is intended primarily for educational use. Users under the age of 16 should use the service under the supervision of a teacher or other responsible adult.

8. Limitation of liability

histographiq is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, iondata Sàrl is not liable for:

  • loss or corruption of data;
  • service interruptions or downtime;
  • any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the service.

You are encouraged to export or otherwise back up any work you consider important. We do not guarantee that content stored on histographiq will be retained indefinitely.

9. Data and privacy

Use of histographiq is also subject to our Privacy Policy, which explains what data we collect, how it is used, and your rights. By using the service, you also agree to the Privacy Policy.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the service after updated terms are posted constitutes your acceptance of the changes. Where changes are material, we will endeavour to notify registered users by email.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Switzerland, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from these terms or your use of the service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
